Different Car Batteries

As the automotive industry introduces new technology, there are now dozens of different types of car batteries. Here are just five of the most common we come across:

  1. Flooded lead-acid battery (Wet Cell): The oldest, most traditional battery.
  2. Silver calcium battery: This battery is usually sealed and maintenance-free.
  3. Enhanced flooded battery (EFB): This battery uses a liquid electrolyte solution.
  4. Gel cell battery (Dry Cell): A non-spillable version of a flooded battery.
  5. Absorbent glass mat battery (AGM): A battery that uses a fiberglass separator to absorb the electrolyte solution to keep itself in place.

Check your owner’s manual to see what type of battery your vehicle uses.

What Does Standard Battery Service Include?

Standard battery service includes two aspects: a visual inspection and a battery test.

When we bring in your vehicle, our technicians will first look at the terminals, cables, and battery fluid level. During this time, we’re verifying that your battery is installed properly with no loose wires or misplaced connections. Typically, low battery fluid means the battery needs to be replaced.

Next is the battery test. This test only takes a few seconds and should be done every time you receive a routine oil change. Using a load testing device, we check the battery voltage. Then, the same tester is used to check the charging system. Again, we’re checking for any low or abnormal numbers in order to determine our next steps.

Battery Service Flushing MI Signs You Need Battery Service

So, how do you know when your car is in need of battery service? Experts say that a normal car battery lasts around four years. Depending on your driving habits, including where you drive, how long you drive, and more, you could end up needing battery service earlier or later than expected.

It’s always a good idea to check your owner’s manual for a more detailed timeline. However, time isn’t the only sign you need to check your battery.

Here are some tale-tell signs that your vehicle needs its battery checked:

  • A delayed start-up: Your engine stalls or is slow to crank as you start it.
  • Dim lights or glitchy electric issues: Your internal lights, phone charger cable, or radio all seem to not be functioning with full power.
  • Check engine light is illuminated: Though it can mean many different things, a check engine light is a sign your vehicle needs service in some way.
  • Bad smell: Battery damage can lead to fluid leaks. If you smell a rotting scent coming from your hood, it’s time to schedule an appointment.
